Hornbill Tour 2025 – An Enchanting Adventure Through Northeast India
Step into a world where culture dances with nature, where traditions echo through the mountains, and the magic of Northeast India captivates the soul
Day 1 : Journey to Mystical Kohima - Arrival in Dimapur
As you step off the plane in Dimapur, the warm air carries the scent of distant forests and the promise of an unforgettable journey. We set off towards Kohima, winding through lush green mountains. As the sun sets, the local markets come alive—vibrant colors, handcrafted textiles, intricate tribal jewelry, and the irresistible aroma of smoked meats and bamboo-cooked delicacies. Let yourself be carried away by the energy of this unique place. The night whispers ancient stories, setting the perfect mood for the adventure ahead.
Day 2 : The Magic of the Hornbill Festival Opening
The golden sun bathes the hills of Nagaland as you step into Kisama Heritage Village, a scene straight out of a movie. The rhythmic beats of log drums fill the air, tribal warriors take the stage, and the festival erupts in a dazzling spectacle of colors, dance, and music. You’ll feel the heartbeat of Naga culture, with traditional games, ancient storytelling by the bonfire, and a thrilling rock concert under the starlit sky. Welcome to a celebration like no other!
Day 3: Kohima’s Historic Charm and the Vibrant Culture of Nagaland
Today, we dive into history and spirituality. We visit the Kohima War Cemetery, a moving tribute where bravery meets peace. Then, a moment of serenity at Kohima Cathedral, a breathtaking sanctuary of reflection, largely funded by Japanese survivors and families of fallen soldiers as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Battle of Kohima during World War II. In the afternoon, we return to the festival for tribal art workshops, where master artisans reveal the secrets of ancient craftsmanship. As night falls, the air is filled with the scent of sizzling delicacies, and the night market transforms into a paradise of colors, flavors, and surprises.
Day 4: The Hidden Paradise – Trek to Dzukou Valley
Nature calls! Today, we embark on an unforgettable hike to Dzukou Valley, known for its breathtaking rolling hills and untouched beauty. As we trek through bamboo forests and vast meadows, the landscape unfolds in serene golden hues of winter. While the valley is often called the “Valley of Flowers of the Northeast,” December brings a different kind of charm—misty trails, crisp mountain air, and occasional layers of frost delicately covering the bamboo shrubs and grass. Take a deep breath, feel the fresh breeze, and savor the tranquility of this winter wonderland. As we return to Kohima, a sense of peace and connection with nature lingers within us.
Day 5: Kigwema and the High-Energy Hornbill Festival
The day begins with the stone-pulling ceremony, where over 1,000 men and women from Nagaland’s 17 tribes unite to haul a massive 24-foot, 15-ton monolith across 4 km—a breathtaking display of strength and tradition. In the afternoon, we savor an authentic Angami lunch hosted by a local family in Kigwema, experiencing the warmth of Naga hospitality. As night falls, we return to the festival for a lively cooking exploration and admire the vibrant indigenous textiles and handicrafts, ending the day immersed in the colors and spirit of Nagaland.
Day 6: Khonoma – The Green Village Where Tradition Meets Sustainability
Today, we venture to Khonoma, a village that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale, where tradition and sustainability coexist in perfect harmony. Here, terraced fields, protected forests, and ancient warrior memorials tell tales of resilience and deep respect for nature. We meet locals who share their secrets to a simple and balanced way of life. As the day unfolds, we soak in the village’s serene beauty and rich heritage before returning to the festival for an evening filled with cultural performances and celebrations.
Day 7: Discovering Zakhama and the Wonders of the Festival
A day to slow down and immerse yourself in local culture. In Zakhama, we get a glimpse of traditional Naga homes, where architecture seamlessly blends with the landscape. Back at the festival, we explore art, music, and indigenous craftsmanship exhibitions. Why not taste a unique local delicacy? Or maybe challenge yourself in one of the traditional competitions? As the night unfolds, nostalgia starts creeping in—our time at India’s most spectacular festival is coming to an end.
Day 8: Safari in the Land of Rhinos – Off to Kaziranga
Leaving the mountains behind, we descend into the vast plains of Kaziranga, a paradise of untamed wilderness. By late afternoon, we arrive at our jungle lodge, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of nature. Time to unwind and prepare for the wild adventure ahead!
Day 9: Into the Wild – Kaziranga’s Spectacular Wildlife
The day begins early with a sunrise jeep safari. As the morning mist lifts, we spot elephants, wild buffaloes, deer, and—if luck is on our side—a tiger! But the true icon of Kaziranga is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, a sight to behold in its natural habitat. Later, we visit a biodiversity and orchid park, where nature puts on its own colorful show. In the afternoon, another safari takes us deeper into the wilderness, strengthening our connection with the raw beauty of the region.
Day 10: Farewell – A Heart Full of Memories
With hearts full of stories and souls refreshed, we bid farewell to the magical landscapes of Northeast India. The journey to Guwahati Airport marks the end of this extraordinary adventure, but the memories—those will stay with us forever.
